There are several lock options for your gate that are very efficient and can provide the much needed security for your premises. There are different gate locks with different functionality, each type being suitable for a different purpose. This Article will discuss all known and existing gate lock options, thanks to the guys at,  they include:

This type of lock enables the gate to be opened by a key on the exterior part. It is designed in such a way that the gate can be opened and closed on the interior without a key. Majority of this type of gate locks are designed to be automatically engaged in lock position, once the gate is shut. This functionality is put in place to guarantee maximum security.

The slide bolt lock is engaged once the bolt slides into its catch. This keeps the gate in locked position. This functionality is reversed to make the gate open, the bolt is simply disengaged from the catch. The bolt is usually located on the interior portion of the gate and cannot be accessed from the exterior. Slide bolts can be used for both wooden and metal gates. Slide bolts are commonly used for short term security, for instance on a farm or on secondary gates. Secondary gates refer to any other gate in a premises aside the main gate.

This type of latch functions by the mechanism of a tightly coiled spring latching two components together. This type of latch makes opening and closing of the gate possible from both sides. The gate is held in place when the latch snaps down over itself. The spring latch is normally deployed in places where the gate is expected to be closed all the time. Some spring latches use a lever on the interior to hold the latch in place so that it does not open until the latch is disengaged. Spring latches can be used on all gate types.

A ring latch is a type of two sided gate latch that can be operated from both sides of the gate. A backplate with a ring would be positioned on the exterior side of the gate. The gate opens when the ring is turned from either side. The movement created by the turning of the ring will lift the arm out of the catch so that the gate can open. Depending on the style of the manufacturer, ring latches can either be spring-loaded or gravity assisted. Ring latches can be installed on gates that are in-swinging as well as out-swinging gates.

Thumb LatchThumb Latches are two way latches. On the exterior of the gate is the part that contains the thump depressor. The functionality of the gate is straightforward. When the thumb is depressed, a latch arm on the interior part of the gate is lifted, causing an opening of the gate. When the gate is closed, the latch arm is raised and falls into its catch on its own. This locks the gate. It should be noted that thumb latches can only be installed on in-swinging gates. There are several types of thumb latches. The most popular one is the cast iron thumb latch.

Level latch is similar to a ring latch in functionality, however, the difference between a ring latch and a lever latch is that instead of having a ring on each side of the gate, a lever latch has a lever handle. Lever latches are very versatile as they can be installed on both in-swinging and out-swinging gates. Depending on the style the manufacturer prefers, a lever latch can either be spring-loaded or gravity-assisted.

A dead bolt otherwise known as a dead lock is a very popular security mechanism for people who are passionate about maximum security.A dead bolt is different in opening mechanisms from several other gate lock options because it cannot be moved to the open position except the lock cylinder of the dead bolt is rotated with a key.Unlike a spring lock, a dead bolt can make a door more resistant to burglary. There are several types of deadbolts. For those that are cylinder operated, there can either be a single cylinder deadbolt or double cylinder deadbolt. The difference between a single cylinder dead bolt and a double cylinder dead bolt is that a single cylinder deadbolt will only accept a key on one side of the lock while the other side will be operated by a twist knob. On the otherhand, a double cylinder deadbolt will accept a key on both sides and does not require a twist knob. Double Cylinder deadbolts are so secure that some fire safety regulations forbid them because of the difficulty in rigging it. A double cylinder deadbolts would not allow people to escape by any other means except the correct key is inserted into the lock.

Magnetic Gate LockMagnetic Gate locks are gates that are locked by magnetic devices. This category of locks usually have a magnetic key. Magnetic gate locks are manufactured in such a way that the key maintains an 100% magnetic signature with the lock. This is to ensure that the locks are not rigged by another magnetic key. Magnetic gate locks are mostly manufactured in China and exported all over the world.

Electronic gate locks are new innovations with the aim of replacing traditional lock systems. One of the reasons why people resort to electronic gate locks is for the purpose of home automation. Electronic gate locks allow for remote locking and unlocking of gate. Electronic gate locks have components referred to ads “actuators” which connects the bolt to a motor. The motor controls the bolt by electronic/electric impulse. There are several ways the electronic impulse enabling the motor to engage or disengage the bolt may be triggered. One of them is through the use of Card readers.Another way to engage and disengage an electronic gate lock is through the use of a keypad, attached to the lock. This is a popular mechanism in gate locks. The use of keypad enables the gate to be opened and locked by a combination of figures which would serve as the pass key. Finally, an electronic gate lock can be operated by a wireless remote control sensor.
